First Love-part 1

I felt something small hit my face. I opened my eyes to see my teacher staring at me.  He had thrown a piece of chalk at me. I quickly stood up. My classmates were hiding their smiles.  “How dare you sleep in my class? It shows how much you are interested in your studies.  I feel sorry for your parents. They spend so much on you and this is how you pay them. “ he shouted. I didn’t reply back and smiled shamelessly. “Why are you smiling? Did I crack a joke here?  Stand out.” he shouted.  After half an hour , bell rang.  The teacher dismissed the class. I came in to take my bag. Rahul came towards me and patted my back. “ Hey bro!! You are really a star. You manage to sleep in his class. He insults you every time and in the end you give him a big smile. You have got guts. I cannot do what you did there. “ he said.  “What can I do?  His lectures sucks and I cannot control my sleep. When he opens his mouth to shout, I cannot stop smiling. It’s like as if some five year old squeaking at me.” I said and laughed.

Rahul and I were friends from third grade. He was partner in all of my well executed pranks.  We knew each other so well.  Dreams, aspirations and secrets were not hidden between us.

Fifteen minutes later- We were waiting for the bus. Rahul was back to his old ways of cracking jokes on teachers and our class nerds. I wasn’t listening to him. I was simply staring at opposite bus stop. There were few people waiting for the bus. Some of them were students like us. While some of them were traveling to other side of city for purpose unknown to me.

But I couldn’t stop looking at the young lady standing there. She was different from all of those who were standing. It was not her beauty but her divine presence. She was wearing creamy salwar that was matching her peachy skin. Her lips were contrast to her peach skin. They were dark red. Her eyes were like doe eyed with diluted pupils. Her cheeks had a dash of apple red. Her hair was lustrous black. She looked like an angel fallen down from the heaven.

I didn’t care Rahul’s continuous nudging. I was simply engrossed in staring at star shining from the opposite bus stop. “Hey, wake up Vicky! The bus has come. Don’t you want to come home?” , he said. Shit! The bus! If I missed this bus, I was sure going to be late and face the wrath of Hitler at home. Who wants that?

How to impress my sister in 10 days -part 4

Day -10 – I hugged my blanket tight. I didn’t leave my bed since yesterday’s night. My mum had called me out many times. I didn’t get up. I pretended as if I was not feeling well.

With every minute, I was getting frightened for him. I was constructing the scenes that were going to take place. Oh! He must have proposed her by now. What was she going to tell him? Hope she was not rude to him?  He has a soft heart. I knew he was not going to take it easy. I should have been there for me. I am such a coward.

“What kind of friend was I who left her friend in pain?” I scolded myself. I didn’t notice that I had spent the morning in the bed. It was evening already. I could see my room was dark. Suddenly the door opened. “Ah! It must be mum. She must have come to check my health. “I thought.  “Hi, how are you feeling?” a familiar voice asked. I switched on the table light to see who it was.

It was him. How come he was here? Obviously, he was here to tell me how he got dumped by my sister. Did she tell him I knew? How was he going to react when I was going to tell that I knew the truth?
I tried to avoid his eyes. “Hi...So how was it” I said pretending to smile. He didn’t say anything for some time. After few minutes, he said, “I didn’t go. I mean I didn’t meet her.”  “What? Why? “I asked.  “I don’t think she loves me. She loves Akash. I had seen that in her eyes. Even that day when I took her out, she spoke only about him.”, he said. “Then you knew she wasn’t into you all this while. Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked. “Hmmm…I wanted to …be with you…I think I have fallen for you.”, he said.

I was shocked. This was not happening. He loved my sister and all of sudden he says he likes me. I don’t believe this. “What are you telling? You didn’t get my sister. It doesn’t mean that you could just tell me all this shit and I will smile and come with you.” I thought. At last I said,” I don’t understand what you are saying? You are not serious, right? I don’t want any more heart attacks.”

“ I know what you are thinking. You are right! You can take time as long as you want. I will wait. But I want you to remember that I am not telling you all this just because I didn’t get the girl. I like you for who you are.” , he said.

Did he say that he likes me? No way! How do I believe him?

“ I need time… This is too much for me to take in… Anyway, why don’t we remain friends?”, I said. “Ok. If you want this, then I will wait. We will be friends and…you are reliable friend.”, he said.
I was happy that everything was fine even if the mission – ‘how to impress my sister in 10 days’ failed.

How to impress my sister in 10 days.-part 3e

Day-7- There were three days left. The spark still didn’t fly between them. They did become quite good friends. He tried to make her day nice. He took her to back to back movies. She was having her time. On the other side I was feeling jealous and insecure. I should be happy for both of them. Then why was I feeling negative?

Sometimes it’s difficult to understand what we really want. I spent the whole day regretting for not going with them. It was my idea that they spent time alone. He had asked million times to escort them. But I refused to do.

Day-8 –I hadn’t slept the whole night. I had covered my sleep ridden eyes with black shades.  He was talking about how they had spent the day and how much fun they had. Though I badly wanted to hear what he was saying, but sleep disabled all my senses. I didn’t realize when I slept.

“Arooshi ..Arooshi …Aroooshi!” he called my name and nudged me. I woke up suddenly with throbbing pain in my head. “What happened? ” I shrieked. “You were sleeping. Was I boring? I am sorry I was too excited to tell you.”, he said. “ No.. No..I am really sleep deprived right now…I am sorry” I said with a big yawn. “I think you need to sleep. I will drop you home.” ,  he said. As I reached home, I straight away headed towards the bed.

I got up with guilty feeling over what I did to him this afternoon. I was dialing his number a zillionth time. It was engaged. “Why are you doing this?” Nishi asked. She was standing at the door of my bedroom. “What?” I asked. “You know what I am saying. You are not cupid. Stop trying to fix a match between him and me. I don’t love him and you know I love Akash (Nishi’s boyfriend) very much. Trust me, Akash is a good guy. He keeps me happy….I hope you would understand. ”, she said.  I wanted to tell her how much he loves her. But I was tongue tight.

Day-9- After yesterday’s episode, I was in dilemma. Should I tell him the truth? I had to. This was going nowhere. What was I going to tell him? I had to see him. I rushed to our usual ‘adda’-the café. I saw him sitting there. He was happy and excited. Why was he punctual nowadays?  It’s an irony that I used to hate his non punctual ways. Now I hated this –he coming early- I had no time to think about what I was going to tell him.

“So tomorrow is the D day. I just spoke to her and as you told me, I didn’t tell her anything. You have no idea how jittery I am feeling right now. Can you come with me tomorrow? I want someone to support me.” , he said.

I had no courage to tell him the truth. How could I just break his heart? I left without telling him. As I was leaving, I caught a glimpse of him. He looked confused.
He called me many times and I didn’t pick up. I sent him good luck message. I knew he was going to be heart broken. But I felt culpable of not telling him the truth.

How to impress my sister in 10 days.-part 3d

Day 5- He was waiting for me for the first time. His face was dull and hopeless. “I don’ t think this is working. She’s doesn’t even look at me..forget about speaking to me. I guess we need to stop this.” , he said, sounding miserable. He did love her. I could see that in his eyes. Why does it pain so bad when you see someone else in the eyes of person you love?

“ Don’t lose hope! If your love is true, she will surely understand that. But we have to keep trying. She will see how much you love her. Don’t give up.” I consoled him.  Now what should I do? I had a miserable lover standing and crying next to me and a disinterested sister (whom he loves so much) in the other side.
All of a sudden, my cell started ringing. God! I didn’t want another disaster to fall upon us. I prepared myself for the worse that was coming-my mum’s usual overprotective dialogues-‘Where are you? Do you know what time it is?”

I picked up call and was relieved that it was not my mum. It was my sister. She was crying. Ah! She fought with her boyfriend again. I hated her boyfriend. How dare he hurt my baby sister? I would have killed him if he was here. He never deserved her. What did she see in that guy? He was quite snobbish and proud.
“What happened? You look worried.” , he said. I had forgotten about my sister’s secret admirer. “Nothing. My sister is coming here.” I said.  “Nishi is coming here. Wow!” he said animatedly. His eyes shined at the sound of her name.

Day-6 – I didn’t notice the time. It was midnight and the beginning of the sixth day.  We were at our place. There was a pin drop silence in my room. The only sound was my sister’s sobs. I was tired of consoling her. I looked at him for help. “ Hey, tears don’t suit you. Did anyone tell you that you have gorgeous smile?” he said. My sister looked at him annoyingly. What the hell was he saying? He is surely going to bring himself down in her eyes.

“Fight happens in all types of relationship. But it shouldn’t deter you. Don’t make it a reason to break your relationship.  Learn to forgive and accept.”, he said and gave my sister a tight hug. I was surprised to see this side of him. I discovered that beneath his ‘careless attitude’ persona was this matured guy. I was really proud of him. He had made my sister smile. This was the man who could keep my  sister happy.

How to impressed my sister in 10 days.-part 3c

Day 3-I was waiting as usual. I had gotten used to his non punctual ways. I was drumming my fingers on the table impatiently. I felt someone cover my eyes. I pulled his hands away from my eyes and saw him behind me. It took me several hours to recognize him. He looked different..his old charm was there . But he looked beyond handsome in his striped full sleeve shirt and black jeans. I wanted to hug him tight and never let him go.  However I controlled my emotions.

I  stood up and had no idea why was I standing. My mouth was hanging. I had no words to say. “You look good…really good. You at last are learning the ways of dressing. Good…one thing…” I appreciated him. I don’t what came into me. I destroyed his neatly combed hair and gave him ruffled look. “Now you look good. Let’s go.” I said.

We were at one of afternoon party that my sister was hosting. My sister was party animal unlike me. To my surprise, she had called me which she hardly does. I had told her that I was getting my friend. Fortunately she had agreed to it.

We looked like aliens in this fun place. I was hoping for an opportunity to get him acquainted to my sister. It was the first step to make them together. I didn’t want to lose this opportunity. So I pushed myself into crowd towards where she was. At last they meet. Unfortunately, it was short one. They just said ‘hi’ to each other. Oh! What a disappointment? Being cupid is seriously tough job.

“Don’t worry. She at least spoke little to you. We will take small steps and remember! Girls like it slow.” I consoled him. He nodded his head.  The day ended with small piece of success.

Day -4- I had given insider information to him about my sister’s jogging time. This time, he did arrive on time. By the way he had to. I had given him an ultimatum-Get up early or else you will forgo the opportunity to see her.

It was 6 am. I had personally seen that my sister goes for jogging. I woke her up and left early to call him for jogging. “She’s going to come. Pretend that it is a coincident meeting. Talk to her normally and don’t forget to be yourself. One more thing- girls take coincident meetings seriously...Make it special for her.”I said.
We waited for a long time. There was no sign of her. Two hours were over. There was still no sign of her. We left for the day with lost hope. When I got back home, I saw my sister sleeping soundly. I couldn’t see that and I threw bucket full of cold water on her. She woke up suddenly and thus we started our cat fight. My mum had to come in between us. Alas! I got grounded for life for my uncontrolled temper.
