A night with the fallen star - Part 7

It was time for him to bid goodbye to his new friend. He wished the time stood still. He had never felt so complete in life. He had never felt that life could be very beautiful. Maya was magical just like her name. It was strange that few hours ago he hated her sight and now he longed for her company.

He had stopped at her place. She got out of the car. She walked few miles , turned and waved him goodbye. He smiled and waved back. He didn't stay for long and continued his journey towards home. He hated goodbyes and couldn't stand the emotions that sprang from it. As he reached home, the silence greeted him. He was tired and walked towards his room. He fell on his bed while his tired body enjoyed the well needed rest.

He woke up to new morning and new self. He freshened himself and headed towards the dinning room. His family were surprised to see him enjoy breakfast with them. They had never seen the happy side of him. He listened to their stories that he missed and spoke about his life which he had not shared with them. After a quick family reunion, he headed back to work.

For the first time, he enjoyed work. For the first time, there were no clashes or starry tantrums. It was like as if new star had risen. While he completed his commitments, he wanted to meet his new friend. He wanted to share his first day achievements with her. He drove past the same place he had dropped her. As he got out of the car, he was surprised. He was standing next to old building bearing name of the hospital. He was engrossed too much with himself that he didn't even bother to ask her where he was supposed to drop her or where she leaved now. He did know that she was in hospital before but he wasn't aware she was never discharged.

He walked toward the reception in the hospital. The receptionist was starstruck at his sight. She took minutes to reply him. He had to repeat many times until she was back to senses. "Sorry sir! I hardly get to see stars coming to this hospital. Give me a moment. Let me check and tell you.", she said. He smiled. She checked her old dust strewn register and got back to him. "Sir, this patient is at room number 12.", she said. He thanked her and rushed towards the room with excitement.

As he walked towards the room, a middle aged man rushed towards him. He caught his collar tightly and asked angrily,"Look, what have you done to my daughter. She is in coma for an year and this is all because of you." The man bent down, releasing his grip from his collar and cried. Vikram bent down to console him. "Sir, I am sorry. But I didn't do anything. I have just met her yesterday.", he said softly. "What do you mean? ", her father asked.  He narrated last night activities with her father.

Her father wasn't convinced. "How do I believe you?", he asked. He took him to the tea stall where they had tea. The tea stall was missing.  He asked a person walking by the same place." There is no tea stall here, sir. Two years back there was an hit and run accident where  the drunken driver ran over the tea stall owner and some men who were sleeping on the pavement. Since then, there is rumour that every night the pavement is haunted by their souls.", the person said.  Vikram understood the eerie feeling he had got when he was there last night. He watched her father holding his palm on his face with shame. "I am sorry , Sir.  I really want to prove that I am telling you the truth. But I don't have any evidence." Her father looked up at him and said, "She wanted to meet you. She said that she wanted to meet you when she was bought to the hospital. Those were her last words before she went to coma." He continued," Take me back to my daughter. That is least thing you can do for me."

After the bitter truth surfaced, Vikram learnt that he was not only responsible for her state but also for the death of the tea stall owner and other men. He wanted to repay all the sins he had done. So he headed towards the police station and confessed his crimes. He also took the responsibility of all the medical expenses of Maya. He was sentenced to four years. Fortunately it was later reduced to three years as soon Maya recovered from coma. A night had changed a fallen star to realize his worth and mistakes.

A night with the fallen star - Part 6

He looked around the bridge for one last time. There was no one around. Cool breeze tickled his skin, making him snuggle inside his jacket more. He felt stupid to follow her advice. He tried to scream. But his voice was too low. "What was that? You have to scream loud. This is whispering?", she said.

He stared her with anger. "Scream louder. There is no one to look at you. Imagine that I am not existing.", she said. "I am not going to do this silly thing. I have had  enough.", he growled. "Please just do this once and I won't let you do it again. I had told you at the beginning. You have to do what I say.", she said calmly. He was irritated. He couldn't contain his irritation inside his heart and spilled it in form of loud scream.

She shook by the impact. She wasn't shocked though. She was excited. "How do you feel?", she asked. He started laughing. After few minutes he got back to his old self. "Nothing. Let's go.", he said.

When they got back inside the car, she started with her never ending questions. "Oh come on! You must have felt great. I know. You are just hiding. Tell me how you felt? Great, right?", she asked. "Yes! Great! Fine! Now we are done.", he said in pretentious excited tone. "Whatever it is. You feel peace inside like...", she carried on but he cut her short.  "Do you always talk non stop? Don't your friends or family ever complain?", he asked. She kept quiet as if she had seen something horrible. "What? What happened?", he asked. She nodded and began, "Nothing! No one ever complains now. After what had happened, no one hardly speaks." He looked at her with confused stare.

"My life was perfect. I had good job that paid me enough to help my dad. He is the only family I had got. My world was small. It started with dad and ended with providing him good life. In my small world, I made many friends. Some good. Some bad. But after the accident, I lost everything. I stay at the hospital ward, waiting to meet my world. My friends hardly meet me now. They have gotten busy with their lives. My dad is the only daily visitor who comes to meet me. It's heartbreaking to see him come and see me everyday like this.", she said.

Vikram felt sorry for her. He wanted to know more about what she was going through. But he didn't know. Words failed. He wasn't used to feeling bad for others. He was always engrossed in his own problems to even notice others.

A night with the fallen stars - Part 5

She asked him again like a curious child, "When was the last time you have screamed?"  "What do you mean?", he asked. "When was the last time you screamed out of joy or despair? " He walked back towards his memory lane. Flashbacks of life showed him no incidents of him screaming out of joy or sadness. How could he? He was a star. He was required to behave in a manner he is expected to.

He had learnt to keep his private life out of public scrutiny very early in life.  Here he was being asked a ridiculous question by a girl he hardly knew and he was searching for an answer. He had all the rights to not to answer this. But he did what he wasn't supposed. He answered her question, "No". He ridiculed himself for this action. "Why did I do that? What if she was some reporter? I know nothing about her.", he wondered.

She giggled and said, "Why do you think so much? Maybe because of that, you haven't let out the emotion that is eating you. Let it out. Now you will come across a bridge after this road. Stop there." He was relieved at last. He had been infuriated with her non stop question through out the journey. Now that she would be gone, peace would be back.

The bridge appeared in few minutes. He stopped the car. She opened the door and was halfway out of his vehicle. "Come out.", she said. He was puzzled. He got out of the vehicle. "What happened? Isn't this place you asked me to drop you?", he asked. She smiled. Her smile irritated him. "No! We are not done yet. I didn't ask you to drop me. I asked you to stop. This is place I come to vent out my frustration.", she said.

He looked around the bridge.  Except the sound of river flowing under the bridge, it was silent and eerie. The road was redone recently. There were no potholes on the road. The  pungent smell of tar still remained. But the bridge seemed like century old. "Isn't it peaceful? ", she asked while turning around excitedly. He nodded, "Yes"

"There is no one watching you out. There is no one judging you here. When you scream; your mind, soul and heart gets lightened. You are suddenly relieved from the stress and everything that bothers you. I come here with burden and leave with only positive feelings. You must try it.", she continued. He nodded, "Okay" She looked at him and said, "You must try it now". He was confused. "Is she gone mad?", he wondered.

A night with the fallen star - Part 4

Vikram replayed the incident in his mind. Those people's vacant stares still gave him goosebumps. They seemed like ghosts or maybe psycho fans. Whatever they may be, they were scary. "Again you went back to your old self. What happened there?", she asked. "Nothing! I don't like answering all your questions.", he rebuked. She was embarrassed and said,"Fine! I will not bother you."

" Some people will never change. They don't understand the word called humanity.", she whispered to herself.  Vikram was oblivious to her allegation. He was in his own world. He wanted only little time for himself and God had conspired to let him have that. He wanted the time to fly soon. It was strange when you want the time to fly soon, it moves too slow. Maybe it's with our mind. Time moves at it's own pace. Our actions determines the speed of the time. It's our human nature to do the opposites. We never let go of the time when we are sad and we let it move faster when we are happy.

Maya couldn't sit idle. Sometime she played with her hair. Sometime she drummed her fingers on her lap. When she fidgeted with the buttons on the stereo player, he would push her fingers away.  She had never been quiet for so long.  "Do you always hide yourself from everyone this way?", she asked, breaking her silence and his thoughts.

"What? Do you always ask stupid questions like this?", he asked firmly. "Do you ask questions to people who ask questions? ", she asked. He shook his head slowly with irritation. "No, I don't always. But it is different with you. You ask too many unnecessary questions.", he said. She smiled. "I need to hide myself from people even those who are very close to me. The profession I am in requires me to be the way I am. It's difficult for me to trust people with my private life.", he continued.

"My life is always in  a radar.", he mocked himself.  He remained quiet for sometime. "I am a star. If I share everything I do in my life with everyone, I jeopardize my career.", he said. "You don't have to share your life with everyone. But you can trust few of them with your secrets. Those few are not always bad or wronged people. They could be good ones. They could be your family or friends. You can't always keep all secrets to yourself. You can't keep burning inside. It's better when you share that heat with others. You reduce the fire that has been hurting you and give warmth to the ones who need them.", she said.

He looked at her and then turned his sight to the road. She was making sense to some extent. He had been burning inside. He had been keeping his frustration and anger inside. No one really knew who he was. They stayed away from him because he had always given them cold vibes. "When was the last time you screamed?", she asked out of  nowhere. He gave her a confused stare. "Now what was she going to do?", he wondered.

A night with the fallen star - Part 3

He looked at her with irritation. "What had happened now?", he wondered. She was staring at the tiny tea stall that was located two minute walk away from his car. "Can you buy me cup of tea?", she asked sweetly. He glared at her. He had agreed to take her for long ride. He had agreed to give her company. Now this was getting too much. "Pretty please. You agreed to make my night memorable one.", she said. "Oh! That silly agreement", he thought.

He bent towards her. He almost startled her. She was unsure about what was going to happen next. She felt uncomfortable. But then he took out a shawl from the glove compartment box. He covered his upper body except the eyes with the shawl. He didn't want any attention at this hour. He knew the media too well. They were like the spy and would do anything to get a story on him. He opened the door and stood up. He was cautious. He looked around for anyone or anything suspicious.

When he found that there was no danger, he walked towards the stall. She watched him while he was doing all this. Then she burst out laughing. He turned around and cautioned her to stop. The stall was run by a short thin man. He had wrinkled skin and his head had tiny strands of grey hair. His eyes spoke of experience. However they were cold. There were two- three people standing next to the stall. They were drinking tea quietly. The owner was preparing tea. His weak hands struggled to pour milk into the vessel. "Bhaiyya, make one tea.", Vikram said.

The old man stared at me blankly. He continued to prepare tea. Vikram felt embarrassed. He didn't understand whether the old man heard what he said. After two minutes, when Vikram reminded him of tea.The old man offered him tea and said warmly which contradicted with his cold eyes, "Here is your tea. Are you new here?". Vikram was startled. "Why did he ask me this question?", he wondered. He nodded his head. He looked at the people standing next to the stall. They seemed different. They gave him vacant stares like the old man. He felt threatened and something eerie about the place.

He took the tea and gave the old man his due. The old man took and offered him a small plastic plate with maggi. He refused. But the old man insisted. "Take it. You are my new customer. I always offer free maggi to new people I meet.", the old man said. Vikram couldn't say no and took it. He whispered thanks to the old man. He looked one last time at the people. They were still staring at him. He was scared and immediately rushed towards the car.

He knocked the window and asked Maya to open the door. She quickly opened it. She took the tea and maggi from his hand. Later he immediately started the engine as soon as he got inside the car. He drove quickly until he felt he was safe and far away. "What happened to you? You didn't take your shawl out.", she asked. She took out tissue from the tissue box on the front shelf of the car. He took out his shawl. She wiped his sweat and giggled. "What!", he said. "You look as if you have seen a ghost.", she replied. The word 'ghost' gave him goosebumps.

A night with the fallen star - Part 2

He didn't know what to do. He never hung out with people unless it was business purpose. He always spent the midnight hours alone, driving long vacant roads to clear his mind. But he was in a fix. He couldn't leave her. "Okay! Just few hours. After that you will leave me alone.", he agreed her condition. She was excited. "Hmmm.. You never know you may like my company.",she said with smile.

He sulked. He helped her sit inside the car and started the engine to drive. They didn't speak for few minutes. She looked around, gazing the outside world through the window. He was focused on driving. She played around with the in built stereo. She was enjoying the sound of pressing randomly the buttons of the radio. He didn't mind initially. But he got irritated and grabbed her hand firmly from the stereo. She looked at him, shocked and pulled her hand from his hold.

"Sorry. I am not used to people touching my stuffs.", he said apologetically. " It's okay. I understand.", she said, looking outside the window. After few minutes, he spoke, " I am Vikram. And you are ?" "I know you are Vikram.", she said, turning towards him for a minute. "I know. I was trying to make a conversation. We just met. I am not used to driving with a stranger at this hour. ", he said. "I am Maya.", she said while she smiled.

"What else you are not used to?", she joked. "What?", he asked bewildered. She laughed. "I was joking. You are not used to people playing with your stuff. You are not used to driving with people at this hour. So I thought you might have a list of things that you are not used to. It would be easy for me to hang out with you tonight.", she said, laughing at her own sarcasm.

He smirked. "Well! I don't have any of such 'not used to thing' habit. I am used to everything.", she said. He didn't smile. He held the steering wheel firmly. He felt like throwing her out of the car. But he didn't. He simply rode the car. "Oh my gosh! You are angry ? Don't take any of my jokes seriously. I am used to pulling people's leg. It's one of my hobby. I cannot sit without talking nonsense. Bear with me for few hours.", she said.

He didn't say anything. He was waiting for the time to get over. He cursed the time he got out of the car to help her. Suddenly she shouted, "Stop the car. Stop the car." He stopped. His heart had almost reached his mouth. "Now what happened!", he wondered.

A night with the fallen star - Part 1

It was midnight. The streets were empty. The roads were perfect for a long drive except for few humps. Vikram drove his car at top speed. He ignored the speed indicators. He enjoyed the speed and the music that played in the background. It helped him to be at ease and be someone who actually he was.

World adored him. Everyone wanted to be part of his life. To the world, he was the scion of legendary  movie star. For the media, he was rich spoilt kid who loved controversies. For his fan, he was God, they worshiped. But no one knew his real side. He hated that world. He wished for a simple normal life. A life without Page 3 controversies, fans waiting for hours outside his house to catch his glimpse or his over demanding father. He wished he get away from this. Unfortunately acting was the only thing he knew. He was good actor in reel and real life.

He was driving on a vacant street with tiny rays of light flickering from the street lights. He felt there was someone in middle of the road. He pushed the brakes hard that it made huge noise to stop. However he almost hit the person. "Not again", he thought. He was involved in many hit and run cases. Due to his father's name and his popularity, he always managed to get bail. He got out of the car instantly to check on the person.

The person was her. Fortunately she wasn't hit. She had fallen on the ground due to fear of getting hit. "Are you okay?", he asked. "Yes! I am fine.", she got up with limping leg. He stared at her with surprised expression. She was very young, barely out of her teens. "You look injured. Please come. Let me take you to hospital.", he said politely, assisting her towards the car. "No, it's fine. I..", she said but he interrupted, "Please let me help you. It's midnight. It is not safe."

She stared at him and asked, "How do you think I would be safe with you? You are drunk." "I am not that kind of person. I only had two drinks. I can drive. Don't you know me.", he said. "I know you very well. You are the star who thinks the roads are your father's property.", she mocked.  He was upset. "Ah! Let me guess, you want to bribe me for not filing a case against you for this accident.", she said.

"No.. Ok! Yes if you think so. I don't want you to file a case against me for this minor accident. By the way, this is not an accident. I barely hit you.", he said. "You did. I am limping.", she said. "What do you want?", he asked. "Hmm! I will not file a case against you. But you have to take out for night out. I have five hours before sun rises. You have already wasted fifteen minutes. Now it is up to you to make my night the most memorable night ever.", she said.  He was shocked and wondered the intentions of the young girl standing before him.

The Marital Conditions - Part 13

Tia and Suhail were searching for the mistake they had made. They did as they were told. There were no fights. Mikha smiled. "Why are you tensed? Nothing is wrong. It is just that you guys are too worked up. You need break. Tell me when was last time you took off.", Mikha said.

They thought for long time. Later Mikha said, "Maybe you should take it now. Go out and have fun." Tia laughed. "How can we take off just like that? ", she said. "Haven't you heard of sick leaves. Take one. Make instant plans to get together. You used to have spontaneous dates more often. What happened after marriage? Why did you stop?", Mikha said.

Suhail remembered the times when they would go out unplanned, leaving work and spending quality times together. He wondered how things change drastically after marriage. Love loses its worth after marriage. Maybe priorities get changed. They had become more responsible towards work than on their relationship. "What are you thinking? Go and have fun.  You never used to think too much on unplanned dates before marriage. Why now?", Mikha said, forcing them to their rooms to get changed to casuals.

After lot of coaxing, they informed their respective bosses and got dressed for the date. Mikha chose the attire for them to wear. They wore the same dress that they wore during their first date.As soon as Mikha sent them out, she got ready to leave. She was happy with whatever she did and hoped everything went well. She prayed that she would come back here to happy couple.

Suhail and Tia wandered at the park they had visited during their first date. They didn't speak or looked at each other. They were like two strangers in the park. They would smile occasionally thinking about what had happened during their first date. Their first kiss, loud laughter and gleaming eyes pouring only love reminded them of how much they had missed. The memories of them discussing their future, sharing their fears and dreams reminded them of how much they had forgotten the past. When they came back to the reality, it would pinch their heart.

Tears welled up in Tia's eyes. It was first time since the cracks occurred in their relationship, she held his hand. He turned towards her. "What happened to us? We were in love. We couldn't stay a minute without each other. We admired the qualities each other. When did we become so critical?",they wondered as he wiped her tears. She hugged me as she couldn't control her sudden outburst of emotions. "I feel lonely. Can we get back together? I don't want to lose you. I promise I won't be rude to you.", Tia cried. "I was never away from you. I will always be with you, Tia. I love you. I promise I won't be mean to you.", he consoled her. Within minutes, they were smiling and happy. They spent their time leisurely by getting back the moments they had lost.

The Marital Conditions - Part 12

Mikha waited for few minutes. She understood that it would take minutes for the iceberg called as ego to melt. She waited until they settled in and relaxed. She waited for the moment when one of them would began to share their day with the other. They stared at each other and then got busy with their cellphones.

After an hour, she only initiated the talk between them. "Come on guys, we don't have whole day. It's strange. You know each other for about six to seven years. You love each other. Then why this cold behaviour? Tia, Let's start with you. How did your day go?",she asked. As usual Tia ( known for her complaining attitude) grumbled about her boss, work and colleagues. Suhail was annoyed. He had advised her many times that if she was not very happy with work then she could change job. He had also advised that he would help her in finding and cracking the right job. But she never listened.

He could take no longer. He blurted out, " Why don't you change your job if you don't like the work? I have advised you many times. But you don't seem to follow my words." Tia snapped, "I don't want to change. I am very close to my promotion. Why should I change now?" Mikha interrupted, "Okay ! If you don't want to change and are positive that you will get the promotion, then don't get upset with these trivial issues. Get used to it. Tia, you need to stop reacting like that. You can say that in calm and composed way. Suhail will surely understand." Tia nodded and sighed in wonderment, "Why do I always get  rebuked?"

It seemed like as if Mikha got read Tia's mind. She said, "It is because you complain a lot. Stop complaining. I know life is hard but it is we who make it hard." Next Suhail started sharing about his activities at work. Tia was amazed at how hard he worked. She had never found time to ask him about his work because of fights. She hugged him once he was done.

Mikha was happy at this development. She wanted them to know the hardship of each other and help to reduce them together. Later they got back to work and day passed the way Mikha had scheduled it. The fights were reducing. They were learning to have fun together while doing house chores or watching the movie,

It was already Friday. The week had passed so quickly. Mikha had one last task to complete. She wanted them to spend quality time together. Both of them were getting ready when Mikha asked them to stop what they were doing. They were started. They wondered, " Did we miss something? Did we go somewhere wrong?"

The Marital Conditions - Part 11

What was that?  He wished the kiss was for long time. It was too quick and spontaneous for him to react. Whatever, it left him numb. His mind was blank. It took him back to time when they had shared their first kiss. It was out of blue moon.  She was looking stunningly beautiful and he had lost his heart one more time to her. He couldn't control himself and kissed her passionately. It was their first date. It hadn't gone as planned but the kiss made that night the most memorable night they shared. Unfortunately, he couldn't remember the last time he had kissed her with passion.

The day passed by monotonously. They came home tired. Tia lied on the couch with her shoes thrown recklessly on the floor. As Suhail arrived, he tripped on one of her shoes. He got up angry. Before things could go worse, Mikha arrived at right time. "Tia, you are grown up now. Take your shoes and keep them on shoe rack. It doesn't take a minute or ounce of your energy will not be wasted if you keep them properly.", Mikha said firmly.

Tia got up lazily and sulked on her way towards the shoe rack with her shoes. As soon as she kept them, Mikha ordered, "Please apologize to him and get back to work."  "Why? I didn't do anything wrong. What work? I have just come back from work.", Tia protested. "You had thrown your shoes. Suhail tripped on that. And work! Who will start preparing dinner? I am not here to do maid services. I am here to guide you. Suhail, please help her.", Mikha said.

Suhail and Tia got changed. They arranged the house and prepared the dinner. Mikha only supervised their work. There would be fight sometimes. Sometimes there would be tiny spark of love between them. Mikha ensured there was nothing big.  After the dinner, they were getting ready for bedtime when Mikha called them, "Your day isn't over. What about entertainment? Come, lets watch a nice movie."

Mikha continued the drill for two days. Tia and Suhail automatically got used to the schedule made by Mikha. They wouldn't venture out for work without goodbye kiss. As soon as they arrived from office, they would get started with usual chores and finish the day with a nice romantic movie. There were tiny fights. But love was re-entering their life again. Mikha was satisfied but not happy. There was still something missing.

Suhail and Tia arrived from work. They got back to their usual housework when Mikha stopped them, "You are acting like robots. You don't have to do housework as soon as you come back home. Why don't you talk to each other? Like ask each other about your day. How will you build the bond with each other when you don't discuss your day. Maybe one of you can solve other's problem at work. Come and sit. Discuss what happened." They sat on the couch, staring at each other. Both of them had one question, "Will he/she listen to me without passing any judgements?"

The Marital Conditions - Part 10

The food was relished by all. Later Mikha started with her gyaan session to the newly married," What did you learn from this lesson? When you are together, even biggest problem may seem tiny and solvable. But when you pit against each other, there will be only chaos and war."

Suhail and Tia stared at each other. They wondered, "Where did that love go?" When they were dating, they understood the essence of love and wanted to be together to feel that essence. Now someone was teaching them the importance of love and togetherness when they were married. Does marriage change a person beyond recognition.

It was time for Mikha and Manav. But Mikha stayed. She wanted to stay for a week to reconcile differences of  the newly married. She wanted to remind them the conditions they had agreed on before marriage.

Her first day mission was successful. She hoped that they learnt something on their first task. But she wasn't convinced. She prayed that at least they learnt what was going wrong between them. They were making their lives complicated. She had to teach them simple lessons which she had learnt on her own. She wondered, " Maybe this generation isn't well equipped for the life. Maybe they were focused on scoring marks than learning the underlying lessons of life."

The next day brought new hope. Mikha woke up with fresh plan to regenerate the lost spark in her sister's life. She saw them hurriedly getting ready for work. They seemed busy with life. Unfortunately they had forgotten the love- essence of life. They were near the doorstep when Mikha reminded them, " You forgot something!" They stopped and looked confused.

"Tia, won't you give your husband goodbye kiss.",Mikha said. Tia was startled. It was long time since she shared anything passionate with Suhail. She nervously kissed him on his cheeks. "You are boring, Tia. Not there! Ok! I will turn my back. Give him the real kiss. Kiss him on his lips." Suhail was nervous. Tia waited for few minutes to gather courage to kiss him. She felt like a teenager experimenting her first kiss. She gave him quick kiss on his lips and left as soon as Mikha could ask her anything. Suhail was shocked. He was numb.

The Marital Conditions - Part 9

Mikha banged the door. Their fight stopped and they opened the door. Mikha barged inside furiously while Manav followed her. She didn't greet Suhail back when he said 'Hi'. She stood in front of messy hall. There were clothes everywhere. The soiled plates were lying on the dining table next to the sofa. The apartment would have looked better if it was kept better. But neatness was missing in Tia's genes.

Mikha sighed. She could smell something burning from the kitchen. She rushed to see the burnt onions on the pan. The kitchen was messier than the hall. She called Tia. "What is this? When did you clean this place last time?", she asked firmly. Tia looked down and replied softly, "Last week." "Are you sure? This place looks like as if you haven't cleaned since ages.", Mikha said.

"No wonder Suhail hates coming back home to see it like this", she continued. Tia rolled her eyes and started out her list of complaints, "You forgot that even I work. It's easy to complain for him and when I ask him for help, he's never there." "Stop whining! I asked you both to make simple dinner. You guys! Really! Fighting with each other won't give you anything. Work together. Let's start with the cleaning.", Mikha said.

Mikha made Tia and Suhail clean the rooms. Whenever there was tiny fight between them, she would ask them to clean the place all over again. After cleaning, she made them to cook. She asked them to cook something simple and tasty. They shared the work equally. Tia cut the vegetables while Suhail arranged the things required to prepare the dish. There was a moment where the lost love sparkled when they would accidentally bump into each other.

The Marital Conditions - Part 8

Tia and Suhail felt ashamed. When they met, love struck them at first sight. They would find ways to meet each other. When they got committed, they wanted to be together. Now when they were together, they wanted to break up. Love is strange in this fast moving era. We give up on everything so easily.

We let small issues, tiny stuffs and third persons rule our lives while we don't look for solutions to mend the cracks. Tia and Suhail let their egos defeat their love. They became their own enemy in their love story. They weren't able to understand what Mikha was saying. They were still looking out for faults in each other.

"But.. I ...you didn't understand what I said.", Tia said, searching for words to explain her concern. " Please Tia! Everyone goes through initial hitches in marriage. Instead of complaining and blaming, why don't you guys sit together and sort it out ? It's easy. What's bothering you- that you are burdened with work at office and home and you don't get sufficient attention from Suhail?", Mikha said.

"I am giving her time and affection. But even I have certain expectation...", Suhail complained. "Can we stop this?! I mean I do understand your frustration, Suhail. But Tia isn't confined to doing house work like me. She has job like you too. Why don't you understand and help each other? Marriage is not only about one doing specific task. It is about giving time and helping each other. Now!! I think if we simply stand here and discuss, we will waste our time and maybe you guys might end up distancing from each other.", Mikha said.

"From today, you must promise me that you will do what I say. Give me a month, I will sort your marriage. If I advise you more, you will simply listen and follow your own heart.", Mikha continued while everyone listened and agreed.

The weekend arrived. Mikha's mission to patch Suhail and Tia up started. She had asked Tia and Suhail to prepare dinner plan for Manav and her. They arrived at Tia's place on time. Unfortunately they stood in front of their door, listening to the newly wed's fight. Mikha was ashamed while Manav gave her 'see, I told you' look.

The Marital Conditions- Part 7

There was complete silence during the lunch. No words were spoken only their minds spoke. "What went wrong? How do I make them understand that they are spoiling their own lives?", Mikha wondered. Tia found it difficult to munch on her favorite dish. She didn't have appetite to eat it.  When your heart is filled with angst and sorrow, food however tasty it is, you lose the appetite.

Suhail looked down at his plate during the whole lunch time. Manav knew that Suhail wasn't capable of handling Tia. She was high maintenance girl. She needed someone who could maintain same lifestyle she was living. He knew he would witness this scene sometime soon but no one paid any heed to anything he said.

When lunch was done, everyone settled in the couch, staring at each other. They were waiting for someone to start. " I can't stay with him any longer. I can't fight anymore.", Tia broke the silence. "What! You are saying this. You are the one who starts the fight. I should be saying this - I can't stay with you any longer. I can't fight anymore.", Suhail argued.

"No! You are the one who comes home barking at me, on the small matters. You have forgotten that even I work. You don't even help. You only complain.", Tia complained. "Ha! Who is saying that? What am I asking you to do ? Just keep food ready before I come and at least clean the house. I am not asking you big things.", Suhail argued back. Manav was enjoying but Mikha couldn't take it any longer.

"Stop it! Stop it, you two! You both are fighting like kids. Where is that love? Where is that promise you made before getting married? What happened to those conditions? Did you forget them?", Mikha asked. Suhail and Tia stayed quiet. How can they forget those conditions? They knew those conditions by heart.

"Do you guys think marriage is a play? When you are bored, you can get away easily. What about those memories you shared? What about those promised you made during the wedding? All forgotten? Tia, how many times you called me and complained about these tiny issues? I gave you the answer! How many times I reminded you about those conditions? Tia, don't you see, your husband left his family for you! Can't you acknowledge him at least with good food and keep the house clean? Suhail, why don't you share her burden? Even she works like you at office. She needs your help. Why can't small issues like this be sorted calmly?", Mikha said.

The marital Conditions - Part 6

Patience is negative in today's fast paced world. We need everything quickly and want to reach maximum distance at less time. Time is not racing. It is we who have cut short the time. We are involved in so many tasks in less time. In this busy world, Tia and Suhail had no time for themselves to even review what was going. They blamed each other for what was going wrong.

Both of them found reasons ( some apparent, some real and some silly) to fight. Fighting was their new pass time. Tia wasn't aware that she enjoyed fighting more than love. But she didn't understand how bad it was affecting each other. They weren't able to balance their work life with home. Suhail hated coming home to face her tantrums.

Their fights entertained their neighbour. Instead of gluing towards their television, they were more interested in their fights. Who knew the once called the 'made for each other' couple would turn out to be the fighting couple one day! Mikha and Manav learned about it. She was obviously not happy with it.

Manav always taunted Mikha about her mistake of accepting Suhail. He always knew Suhail was not right for her. But Mikha never listened to him. Now sisters were facing the consequences of not listening to him.

Mikha invited them for lunch to discuss the issues. On their arrival, Mikha could feel that the love she felt between them was lost. Their physical appearance was completely changed. Tia looked frail in her white summer dress. Her hair was unkempt and she wore no make up. She loved to dress up. What happened to her? On the other hand, Suhail looked dull. He sported unshaven look. There was stress lines and dark circles under his eyes. He looked older than his real age.

Mikha wondered , " Is this what our new generation thought about marriage? How can such beautiful institution change people and their love for each other?".

The Marital Conditions- Part 5

A month hadn't even passed. Small cracks began to appear. Suhail was quick to notice them and mend those cracks. He also tried to maintain the same excitement they shared during pre-martial times. It wasn't easy. Tia had issues. She wasn't used to many people in the house. She had issues about everything that was happening in her new house.

The major issue was the background gap between two families. She was solely raised by her sister after her parents died when she was very young. She was always protected from sympathizers, back bitters and nasty people. However her new house was filled with such people. There was no one to save her except herself from these guys. Anyone who came home would look at her with pity eyes and feel sorry for her dead parents. She didn't enjoy such attention.

She wasn't used to kitchen chores. Her mother in law was shocked when Tia said she didn't know how to prepare tea. However her mother in law taught her though she ridiculed her for not knowing how to cook. Tia remembered days when her sister would prepare her favorite dishes without complaining when she was very tired.

As soon as she came home from work, her mother in law expected her to finish other household chores. She never had single minute to even rest her tired soul to start afresh. Unfortunately delicate Tia was suppressed by these frustration. She did complain to Suhail. Suhail supported her and also explained it to her parents. Unfortunately nothing worked and soon he decided to move out for the best interest of his family.

Everything was fine for three month. He didn't buzz her for not to serving tea or food on time. He also didn't complain when the house seemed messy when he arrived home. He understood that it was new house and it would take time for Tia to rearrange. But everything has an expiry date including Suhail's patience.

One day he couldn't hold his patience any longer. His day at work didn't go fine. The messy house and no dinner at home spiked his anger. He scolded her,"Why can't you at least keep things properly at home and cook food? I have moved out of house for you when you failed to adjust. You can at least manage house for me." She was furious at his comment and didn't stop to pour her heart out,"I also work at office like you. I get tired. If you really want me to manage the house, why can't you help me? Why can't you share bit of responsibility with me?" The fight started like this and never got over.

The Marital Conditions - Part 4

Manav sulked. He thought, "What kind of conditions are these? We could have rejected Suhail easily saying he is not fit for Tia. Why did she had to lay these silly conditions? Obviously every boy agree with these conditions." Before he could raise his voice, Mikha spoke, "Thanks Manav! This is the most special gift you have given to me. You gave me the right to accept Suhail for Tia."

Manav was furious... furious at himself for letting him agree Mikha's offer. He didn't know that Mikha would ask this for her wish. He had promised her during the last birthday that he would grant any wish she asked for. He thought she would use her wish wisely. He knew his wife was gentle. She never asked for any gifts even during her birthday. He should have known that she would ask this. He should have been very careful while granting the wish.

Tia hugged her sister and brother in law. She was delighted. She was on top of the sky. She was happy to be part of Suhail's life. Suhail was still shocked. He didn't move. He thought this was a dream. A dream he had always wished would come true. He was going to marry his love and live happily ever after.

The marriage preparation started. Both the bride and groom's family gathered for preparation. The dates were set. They had only one month for the 'D' day. Tia and Mikha would spend the day for shopping. Their list never ended. Suhail would be busy with the family events. The relatives were arriving. The house was getting filled with long lost as well as closed ones. There was chaos as well as happiness. Suhail and Tia found little time for each other.

The month passed away quickly. Invitations were sent to all guests. Manav had restricted Mikha and Tia to send the invitations to only the chosen ones. But Mikha couldn't find the names whom she could drop out of wedding. She had bought gifts for all her relatives ( good as well as backbitting ones). Tia's never ending shopping never ended. She shopped clothes, perfumes and jewelry when she had bought sufficient. Sufficient wasn't enough Tia. She wanted to look good during every function.

The 'D' day arrived. The wedding happened. Tia looked gorgeous in pink lehenga and Suhail looked ravishing in white suit. Both glowed with happiness. The love beamed through their eyes while they took their vows to never be apart and love each other forever.

The Marital Conditions - Part 3

Suhail never expected Mikha would do this. This new avatar of hers was shocking. If it was from Manav, he wouldn't have been surprised. Marriage conditions!! What was this now? After buttering her, doing almost every chores in the house like unpaid worker and taking her out, she came up with this. Why? Didn't she trust him? Didn't she consider him to be worthy enough for her sister Tia? Tia seemed as surprised as Mikha. She too didn't expect this from Suhail.

" What? What are you saying, Mikha?", Manav asked angrily. He found his wife's conditions foolish. "I didn't even start! I only said if Suhail and Tia agrees that they can adhere to these conditions, I am happy to get them married. Marriage is not a joke. You are young and totally in love. You will understand true self of each other once you are married. There will be ups and downs. Are you capable enough to face them together when your relationship is under difficult times", she said.

"But you never spoke about these conditions to me when we were getting married?", Manav asked and quickly added, " I am not supporting Suhail with my statement. I find your conditions stupid." Suhail smirked at his comment. "What a bastard?", Suhail thought while looking at Mikha with begging eyes.

"Please don't do this, Dee.", Tia begged in distraught. She almost cried when Mikha placed her hand on Tia and said, " Why are you guys overreacting? These conditions are nothing serious. If your love is strong, you can bear them. Manav, I never mentioned these conditions to you because I know what marriage to you contained for me. I was sure I would have bit of sacrifices as well as struggles. Tia is naive. She is fickle minded. Today she might want this . Tomorrow she might not want that. She is not used to sacrifices and struggles. She isn't aware that marriage is beyond celebrations. It is a responsibility. She got all the good things in life. She never had to struggle in life. She has tantrums when her wish isn't fulfilled. I am sure Suhail can manage that now. But he can't meet all of her demands of monetary value and socially." Manav smiled when Mikha mentioned about Suhail's disadvantage. He knew he couldn't satisfy Tia.

Tia looked at her with disbelief. She still didn't understand why her sister didn't consider as grown up. She didn't argue. She listened when Mikha listed down her conditions. Suhail listened calmly. He didn't have any other choice. Mikha put down her conditions:

a) Shower attention

b) Appreciate. Criticism kills the romance

c) Accept. Accept. Accept everything.

d) Love even if you hate

e) Spend time. Time is precious.

f) Create memories. Sweet ones more. You need them more

g) Go on dates. Enjoy. Travel places. Go for exotic holidays.

Suhail and Tia smiled. These conditions seemed simple. They had followed most of these conditions since the time they were  in relationship with Tia. He treated Tia like a queen. He promised to keep her happy. They looked at each other and agreed.

The Marital Conditions- Part 2

Suhail whispered, "How do I convince him?". But his whisper sounded loud enough for everyone to hear. Tia giggled secretly. "Did you say something?",Manav asked firmly though he was aware of what Suhail had said. He smiled mockingly , knowing that it was difficult for Suhail type of guys to impress him. According to him, Suhail didn't have the charm or aura that he carried. But that was Manav. He never found any guy superior than himself.

Suhail nodded 'No' nervously. He scolded himself for being too nervous. He did love Tia. But love wasn't enough to impress the world. He had to show everyone especially Tia's sister and brother in law that he could provide the same love and care that her family bestowed upon her for years.

It was piece of cake for him to convince his parents. But to impress her family, it was like walking on fire. He had taken several months buttering her sister in order to have one meeting where he could convince them to accept him. It wasn't an easy job. First few days had gone in waste. He had thought of picking and dropping Tia would at least make her sister let him inside the house. Unfortunately Mikha would greet him outside without a smile or inviting him inside the house.

Tia also tried to get him inside the house in pretext of offering him a glass of water. But this idea also failed. Mikha had admonished her and asked her to tell him to get his own water bottle. After few days of hard work of impressing her sister by buying groceries for her on their way home or buying sweets  or bringing in takeaways made her change her mind. One fine day she invited him for a lunch. Thus this led him to get into her good books.

Days passed by and Suhail found a day perfect to ask Mikha indirectly for Tia's hand. Mikha understood but she pretended as if nothing happened. She let him persuade more. She was enjoying the attention. Later one night, Tia asked her directly. "I know you guys want me to accept Suhail's proposal. But I am not ultimate decision maker on this. Your brother in law also has a say in it.", Mikha said.

After coaxing, Suhail was siting in front of them, thinking about how to convince them. However what was going to happen next, he had no clue. After buttering, coaxing and doing all odd jobs, he didn't expect Mikha would do this.

The marital conditions - Part 1

It was Sunday afternoon. It wasn't usual weekend afternoon for Tia. Mostly her Sunday afternoon would be spent on the bed with her best friend - laptop. But today was different. Her sister Mikha and brother in law Manav agreed to meet her boyfriend Suhail after long argue-discussion session. She was excited as well as nervous. She hoped that everything would go smoothly as planned.

"Where is Suhail?", she wondered. He was supposed to be here now. She looked at the time and then at her brother in law. Suhail always did this. He never made it on time during all the occasions. After two long hours and Mikha's never ending cribbing, he arrived. Tia sighed.

Tia peeped outside to confirm whether it was him. She was relieved that he had at least made sure to look good and arrive in his friend's royal black Mercedes. She wanted him to convince her sister and brother in law as a man who will take care of all her needs. She believed that at least his physical appearance would 50% convince them. It was easy to convince her sister but not her brother in law.

She was first to reach to the main door to welcome him. She quickly hugged him before they arrived. They took him into their sitting area. There was pin drop silence for few minutes except for the eye contact between Tia and Suhail.

Then Manav spoke. His voice was firm and serious. "I reckon that you must have been stuck in traffic.", Manav said. It seemed like question rather than statement. He loved to use the old english words even though he had limited knowledge of them. He felt that it showed his class and status.

"Yes! The traffic is terrible nowadays.", Suhail said nervously. Suhail was aware of Manav's hatred towards him. He knew that Manav always wanted a classy husband for his sister in law. According to Manav, Suhail didn't match anywhere. "How am I convince him?", Suhail said.

A second chance ? - Part 6

I still carried my past. I couldn't accept anything. His family or him. Every time I tried, I failed. Love never happened to me because I was never out of love with my past. I always compared my past with my present. Maybe I was never in present. I longed for my past.

My husband loved me. He did everything possible only to get my attention and love. But I couldn't change. Love just didn't happen. My heart was still beating for that boy who broke my heart. Why? Why couldn't I simply move on?  Why did I long for that boy to come back?

After two and half years, my husband stopped trying. He still loved me. But he was disappointed. I couldn't give him anything. The only thing I gave him was pain. He had waited so long for me to change.  His patience wore out but his hope never died. He still hoped that I would give him one more chance to show me love.

I was cold. I had no love to give except for my first love. Whatever my husband did, I couldn't express my gratitude for it. I never felt happy with whatever he did for me. My complaints turned into nagging with every passing day. We were strangers who fought during time when we were together instead of making love.

When he learnt about my past, he was mad. He would blame me sometimes about me ruining his life. I don't feel guilty. I feel sorry for him. I hurt him even though it wasn't his mistake. Strange! When love was waiting at my doorstep, I wasn't ready.

They say second chances come once in blue moon. I was indeed fortunate to get one. But I was naive to not to believe in it.  Here I am , still unsure whether to take it or leave it. I want to go back to clean the mess I had done and accept my husband. But it is too late and I haven't confronted my insecurities yet. The bell rings. It is my husband, I know. The same drama would start again. I know I have to change and I need to begin somewhere to initiate this change. When is the question. I open the door and look at his brown eyes. I hesitate to begin my move. After few long minutes, I hug him and say, " I am sorry. Give me a second chance. Let's start again.

The Second Chance? - Part 5

The second chapter of my life. I never thought about this and it began when I hadn't finished the previous one. I was trying to get over the pain. I had almost gotten out of my shelf. I was getting used to my surrounding. I was trying to be more human.

I was introduced to my future husband. He was perfect. He was my dad's friend's son. He was polite. He was gentle. He was everything that any girl would want her right man to be. But I wasn't still ready to leave my past. I wasn't still ready to give love second chance. My heart was in pieces. How was I going to believe in love again?

I didn't expect our weekend getaway to be chance for my family to discuss about the prospective alliances. So when I was alone with my mum, we argued on this issue, " Why didn't you ask me about this before deciding about my marriage?" "Well! We haven't still decided anything else. We are not going to force you into marriage. But before you decide, why don't you at least spend time with him?", my mum said. "How can I decide within few meetings? I am still not ready for this. I don't know him well.", I said. " Meet him first. Decide later.", she said.

I couldn't argue more. I met him. He seemed good.  I agreed for the marriage without even thinking whether I was really ready for love. Why? I have no answer. I feel guilty for rushing in things and taking hasty decision.  We were married within few months.

Everything seemed smooth during the first few months before wedding. He seemed to be in love with me. But I still felt incomplete... something was missing. I couldn't love him the way I used to love my first love. My husband was better than any man I had ever loved. But I wasn't still able to completely give myself to him.

Love was missing in our relationship. After two and half years, we are still standing at the same place as strangers. Nothing changed between us. We were strangers to each others while a couple to outside world.

The Second Chance ? - Part 4

Families especially mums are best at sniffing when something is not right in your life. I still don't get about her 'something's wrong sniffing ' expertise. Anyway I was going on about my life. However my mum's constant inquiring about my life and problems made me manipulate the real problem of my life.

I told her a story of  stressful work life and how I craved for a holiday. It was half truth. Work was stressful but it was only time I didn't think about him. It was only time when I was focused on the something else in my life. All I wanted is to get away from him. I don't know why I end up thinking about him when I tried to move on and forget him.

My mum smiled. She said, " I know what you need." I was shocked. My heart stopped beating at a point. I thought," You know what I need?" with my eyes wide open. "You need a pampering time. I know a place where we can get you pampered and rejuvenated. Maybe we will get our fun loving daughter back.", she said.

I sighed. I was hoping that someone knew what I was going through without me having to say anything. But my mum isn't God. How would she know what her daughter was going through? I didn't want her to know what I was going through. I don't think she would take the news in good way.She was conservative even though she was caring and amazing woman.

So we planned our weekend getaway. The place she spoke to us was dad's friend's estate. It was situated in the mountainous range. It took us 6 hours to reach our destination. The place was cool and peaceful unlike our city life. We were spending three days in this heaven.

We were greeted warmly by Dad's friend and his family. His friend spoke greatly about their( Dad and his) rendezvous in this town. In those three days, we were treated with love and care. It was indeed a change for me. But this was just a beginning.. a beginning of second chapter that I didn't know , would happen. I wasn't ready yet for one more meltdown.

The Second Chance ? - Part 3

Words speak louder than actions. True! My words spoke louder and also slapped me back. Yes! The wise men did say it right- Never do things when you are drunk. Well! I jumped into a trap I made. I was foolish to break my own heart.

My excitement increased when I spilled my feelings out. I called him. He didn't pick the call. But it didn't hurt me when a female voice spoke," Hi, he isn't here." It hurt me more when I could hear his voice clearly from the background. He was talking about me, " Ah! That girl again! I don't understand why is she so clingy?" I was disappointed. I shouldn't have done all this drama to hear him say that.

Disappointment and heartbroken, I continued with the party. I pretended I was alright. But I wasn't deep inside. I truly loved him. But it was my mistake I didn't let it go of my feelings for him. He was still special for me.

I fell down. I got up. I rubbed  the dirt out off my soiled soul. I continued with my life with a broken heart. I concentrated on other relationships ,career and writing. Though first two didn't help in erasing my pain. But writing was medicine to my wounded heart.

Pressure in work, relationship breakdown and depression was common to me. It didn't hurt me. I was unaffected by them. I kept myself busy with life. I didn't wanted to get involved with thoughts about him.

Life had become boring and monotonous. Nothing amazed me. I didn't enjoy life like I used to.  I was like a zombie. My mum smelled something fishy going on with me. So did the whole family.

The Second Chance ?- Part 2

He left us for good. My life took a pause. I started to stay away from people. I loved long lonely walks to places unknown. I started writing poems about unrequited love. Words poured out in form of stories or poems. People liked it. But they didn't understand the pain.

Sad songs became part of my life. I made sure my silent cries were unheard. The pause was only for few months. As soon as I graduated and got my first job, I got busy with work. New friends came in and my life was back to normal. There were days when I would think about him. I would call those days as blue days.

I hid my pain inside my heart for two years. I searched for him in men I met. I searched for him in my friends I made. I couldn't find him anywhere. I would snoop around his pictures in Facebook.

He was happy with his new found friends. The USA became his new found love. He seemed to enjoy life unlike me. Obviously he had no idea about my secret admiration for him. I would think if he ever got to know how much I loved him, would he stay for me? Then my conscious would scold me for being too unrealistic. Why would he ever leave his ambitions for me?

On new years eve, I made the biggest mistake. I shouldn't have. I should have listened to my conscious that was preventing me to make that mistake. Why? Oh Why did I listen to my heart? It all started when my friends and I planned for new year (only girls) party at a club. I was totally excited with idea of getting drunk. That was first mistake I did. We danced and got drunk.

It was first time I got drunk. My mind was blurred. My heart was beating faster. I didn't know what I was doing. I opened my Facebook app on my phone. I checked the messenger and saw he was online. I pinged him without thinking the consequences. "You have forgotten me. But I haven't.", I messaged him. There was no reply. I felt my whole body shiver. What was doing? Anyway I felt excited and cool.
