The Flashback

My son was at his best to ruin my temper. He found his favorite weapon to do that- ice cream stall. Arrgh!! These five year olds little tots! They know the art of getting their way. A ‘please’ with sweet smile would be enough to cut past our heart and mind. Voila! They win their argument and we lose.

His innocent brown eyes looked right up to me. I knew that look!  “Fine! Only one! If you end up crying with stomach ache, don’t blame me that I didn’t warn.”I said with firm tone. All of sudden, I heard someone chuckle behind me. The voice was so known to me…I had heard this laughter before. I turned behind to uncover the strange voice. It shook me when I saw my past standing next to me. He was also shocked to see me. He tried not to look at me. His face was drained and white as if he had seen a ghost.  He paid extra for the ice cream and didn’t care to take the change.

He didn’t change. He still looked dashing and sophisticated except those few wrinkles and bespectacled eyes. I wonder how a two letter word had changed our lives. All of memories and secrets of him that I buried long back had surfaced again. I never wanted to see him again after that unfortunate day. That day … that hour was not with us. We were meant to be apart. I felt someone holding my hand. I thought it was him for a moment. I wanted it to be him so that I could be there with him. Fate never wanted it that time and why would it be so kind this time? I looked at my side where my son was holding my hand as an indication for us to leave.

Next day I woke up to nauseating morning. My house had become totally solemn and dark. I couldn’t see my little monster suffering too much. Before his pain could be much worse, I took him into nearby clinic.
No way!!  This can’t be. There were too many hospitals and clinics next my place and I get into this clinic only to face my past again. His name read boldly as ‘Dr. Raghav Dixit –child specialist’ on name list (list of doctors) pasted on the wall.
